Wilczy Szaniec

       Wilczy Szaniec to nazwa kwatery głównej Adolfa Hitlera oraz Naczelnego Dowództwa Sił Zbrojnych (OKW) w latach 1941–1944. Została zlokalizowana w lesie gierłoskim, na wschód od wsi Gierłoż (dawniej Görlitz) i około 8 km od Kętrzyna, obecnie w województwie warmińsko-mazurskim.

      Budowę kwatery zainicjowano, aby Hitler mógł dowodzić wojskami na froncie wschodnim. W pierwszych dniach września 1939 roku utworzono pierwsze kwatery główne Führera, które były przemieszczane w zależności od sytuacji wojennej. Hitler przez lata przebywał w ośmiu głównych miejscach, m.in. w Gierłoży, Bad Münstereifel, Górach Schwarzwaldu czy w rejonie Ziegenbergu.

      Wilczy Szaniec był najlepiej znaną z tych kwater, składającą się z żelbetowych schronów, lekkich budynków i drewnianych baraków. 20 lipca 1944 roku miał tu miejsce nieudany zamach na życie Hitlera zorganizowany przez Clausa von Stauffenberga i Wernera von Haeftena.
